Review:
Bier Keller is an odd one to review as it does accept walk ins but we’d say this is much more like a club where you’d book a table for a night of cheesy pseudo Bavarian entertainment than a drinker’s bar. Situated alongside the entertainment/club venue Fibbers, Bier Keller was once part of the venue and still shares access and overall ownership. I must say they’ve done a nice job converting the once grotty back room into a cavernous and raucous space, predominantly set out with huge benches and with a central stage area. The space given over to the casual drinker is small in comparison, very much a second thought as all tables are only available to booked parties. The unisex toilet stalls are an interesting alternative to the norm although they looked like they took a bit of a hammering every weekend. The German theme is prominent throughout with lots of antlers and skis adorning the brick walls, you could almost believe you were in a German tavern although it does feel a little stereotypical to be true. There was a pretty good selection of European lagers on draught and bottles and obviously they served steins as well, but don’t expect value for money here, the prices were horrendously steep, especially if you order the huge steins. I was assured by a friend who has been there for the live Oompah band that he’d enjoyed frankfurter sausages, steins and entertainment. I can imagine it has its place for large group parties, stag do’s and the suchlike, but it’s really not the sort of place we’d return to. Access was rather limited and the outside area was basically a bit decking surrounded by large barrels purely for smoking. It’s always good to have variety in the City especially as it gives big groups of lairy people somewhere to go so we can avoid them.
