Review:
The Cock & Bottle is a very traditional pub situated halfway down Skeldergate, far enough from the busy main streets to feel quite isolated and more of a local’s venue than one that would bring in a wide range of trade. Their main focus is sport with lots of small screens dotted around the simple open brickwork interior. Although the pub does have a bit of an 80s feel with all the red brick it does also have some heavy black timber beams supporting the bar and a cosy area beneath an inglenook fireplace. We weren't 100% sure if this was part of an older building that had been incorporated or modern reclamation, either way it does add a bit of character between the Fruit Machines. There’s plenty of seating and quite a subdued atmosphere, the small bar stocking a simple range of real ales alongside the usual mass-produced lagers. There are a couple of chairs out the front but other than the narrow view of the river between the buildings it’s not really anything special. The toilets needed a bit of love and weren't the most pleasant but the rest of the interior is clean and the staff are very welcoming, as were the locals. This really is a pub trapped in a time bubble, unchanged for many years, but it's nice to still have places like this with the gentrification of other areas in York. The Cock & Bottle is also renowned as a very haunted pub, particularly by  the 17th Century George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, who once had a workshop on the location of the Pub. So if you're into the paranormal then it's a good place to visit, we found it  pleasant  enough for a brief stop.
