Review:
The Postern Gate stands within the impressively designed Travelodge right next to Fishergate Postern, the design of the building keeping very sympathetic to the surrounding City Walls and embankment down to the river. It’s quite an urban and run down looking area backing onto the beautiful medieval construction, but shadowed by empty 1970s office blocks and the York ring road, quite a contradiction, but as things are going Piccadilly is slowly being regenerated so I can’t imagine it’ll stay this way for too much longer. Now Wetherspoon’s always get a bad rep but I feel it’s a little unfair these days as you really can’t fault what’s on offer at The Postern Gate in regard to a wide selection of real ales, casks and keg and all at very good prices. What lets this particular pub down is really the venue itself; it’s a huge vacuous modern space which is nice enough after recent renovations but you’ll never really get past the fact that it’s just a huge room with lots of tables in it. The large bar is easily accessible though and dominates towards the back. There is a small courtyard area to the side and some seating on the riverside with beautiful views of the Walls and law courts building. The cheap drinks area always going to attract a bit of a rowdy crowd but it’s by no means as bad as it used to be and when we visited there was a huge mix of people and quite a relaxed atmosphere. The toilets are perfectly fine and accessibility throughout is top notch, as you would expect from a modern building. Also during the day it’s a very family friendly place, many people coming for the cheap food. All in all I’d say forget what you think of the Wetherspoon brand and judge them on their beer, from which there is plenty of choice on offer. It’s not the nicest venue but it’s certainly worth stopping by if you’re in that area and the riverside beer garden is certainly worth a visit for unique views down by the Foss.
