Review:
The Nook began its life as a little coffee shop back in 2013 and has gently evolved over time to a cocktail bar and now after a refurbishment in 2018 to its latest incarnation as a self-styled Street Food Kitchen. Access to the little one room bar is a bit narrow what with its position on Castlegate and as expected there’s no outdoor space and not much space within, it is a nook after all. But what space they have is well utilised with a cosy but accessible layout. Thanks to the use of light coloured upcycled wood benches and tables paired with the white walls, the gentle glow of Edison bulbs and fairy lights all generates a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The largest expanse of wall down the right hand side is adorned with a beautiful graffiti style mural while a large table in the bay window is especially welcoming. Old beer cans with succulent plants in them line the wall to the other side, a nice and quirky display. To the back of the room up a couple of steps is the bar and a large fridge displaying their extensive range of craft beer cans, if you’re willing to pay a little extra then there are some great beers to be had. They have also recently installed four Brew York exclusive keg lines which offers a diverse range of the local brewery’s fine range. The bar itself is staffed by a very friendly and accommodating bunch with their main speciality being unique cocktails.

There’s just one well-presented shared toilet, although we found this rather quaint, it was like drinking at someone’s house. They do have live music regularly which can be quite special in such an intimate space as well as being very welcoming to families and dogs, although you do need to remember this is quite a small bar. The Nook seems to fill its very own niche within York; we’ve yet to find another place like it. So if you want to be welcomed into a café bar like it’s someone’s home with a  superb range of craft beers for a relaxing drink then this is certainly the place to visit.
