Review:
Despite being located in such a prime area directly next to the Minster, the York Arms is a little overlooked as a pub, probably due to its inconspicuous brown façade and minimal signage. It is a very traditional Sam Smith’s though, which means old style wood panelling, brass bar tops and peering locals. It wasn’t the most welcoming of pubs and we did get a couple of funny looks, probably because the clientele are generally of the older persuasion. Saying that though the place was polished and sparking to an inch of its life, obviously having had a recent revamp the seating looking brand new and the toilets were in a very good state. It doesn’t help to see every nook and cranny though when it would appear 1000 watt lights are the order of the day; this was definitely a very well-lit pub. Being a Sam’s pub this did also mean that there was no entertainment, music or anything other than their standard selection of beers, the redeeming quality of this being the price is tremendously low, we got four pints for the price of two in a pub just across the road. There’s nothing else of note to say about the York Arms though, as a Sam’s pub it’s probably the least popular in the City and not really a pub we would return to. If you do like a very cheap drink in a bright and quiet place then I guess this traditional pub could be worth popping in to but there’s certainly a lot better very close at hand.
